Methods to Create Convertible Cellular Popups (With out Impacting web optimization)

Do you want to use mobile popups on your website?

Mobile popups can be very effective in generating leads, increasing sales, and getting more app downloads. However, you need to get them right. Otherwise, you could damage your website's search engine ranking.

In this guide, we will show you how to create high conversion mobile popups without affecting your SEO rankings.

How could mobile popups hurt your SEO?

Mobile popups can affect your SEO (search engine optimization) efforts if they violate Google's guidelines. Google states that websites may rank lower in mobile search due to the use of intrusive interstitials or intrusive popups.

Google doesn't want your popup to cover all or most of the page before the user sees the content. These are a few examples from Google that you should avoid.

Google's examples of popups that would penalize the page

If there is a popup on your page that comes up immediately, Google may penalize that page. This means your page will not rank as highly in Google search results as it would otherwise.

Then you may be wondering why are you taking the risk of creating popups on mobile devices?

The short answer is, you can increase conversion rates, which leads to more leads and sales.

Because of this, many smart business owners and marketers continue to use popups on both mobile and desktop.

The important part is that you need to CREATE your mobile popups CORRECTLY so that it doesn't affect your SEO rankings.

Here's how to create mobile friendly popups that won't hurt your SEO rankings

There are several ways to create mobile popups that won't hurt your SEO rankings. You could:

  • Create a full screen popup that will take a delay to appear.
  • Create a banner or slide-in that only covers a smaller part of the screen.
  • Only use instant, full-screen popups for legal notices. Examples of this are cookie permissions and age verification popups. These are not penalized by Google.

Our example explains how to create a full screen popup that won't appear until after the user has been on your website for a certain amount of time. However, we'll also share best practices and tactics that you can use to add smart display rules for further optimization.

Creating a popup for mobile devices only with OptinMonster

OptinMonster is the easiest way to create a mobile-only popup. It's the most popular lead generation tool out there and has a powerful WordPress popup builder.

First, you need to visit the OptinMonster website and register for an account. While all templates are mobile-responsive, you need the Pro account to activate mobile-specific targeting rules for displays.

After registering you need to install and activate the OptinMonster plugin on your WordPress site. For more information, see our step-by-step guide on installing a WordPress plugin.

After the installation, the Welcome to OptinMonster screen should appear. Just click the Connect Your Account button and follow the on-screen instructions.

Connect your WordPress website to your OptinMonster account

Once your OptinMonster account is connected, the Campaigns page should appear. You can also accomplish this by walking OptinMonster »Campaigns in your WordPress administrator. Click the "Create New Campaign" button in the upper right corner.

Click the Create New Campaign button to create a new campaign in OptinMonster

You will be taken to the OptinMonster Campaign builder. Just leave the campaign type on Popup.

Select the filter for mobile-optimized devices for your campaign template and select a template. We will use the offer template.

In OptinMonster's campaign builder, select a campaign template that is optimized for mobile devices

OptinMonster asks you to name your new campaign and choose which websites to display it on. Enter these details and click the "Start Building" button.

Name your mobile popup campaign and click the button to start creating your popup

The template automatically loads the opt-in view of the popup in the OptinMonster Builder. With the drag and drop interface, you can easily adjust the content or add new elements.

For example, to change the default text, all you have to do is click on it and enter the text you want.

Editing the text of your OptinMonster popup

To edit the image, you need to click the settings button for the column it is in. The settings button is the gear in the gray box.

Edit the column to change the image in the mobile-friendly quote template

You can then upload the image you selected by clicking the "Background Image" option on the left.

Replace the image in your OptinMonster popup

Make as many changes as you need to in your popup.

You also need to edit the success view. This is what users see after entering their email address. To edit the success view, just click the Success button above your popup.

When you are happy with both the login view and the success view, don't forget to click the save button at the top of the screen.

Edit the success view and save your changes in the popup

Set the display rules for your mobile toast

Now it's time to set the display rules for your popup.

First of all, you need to click on the "Display Rules" tab at the top of the screen.

The default rule is that your popup will appear after users have been on your site for 5 seconds. You may want to extend this period. We will use 10 seconds.

Edit the display rule so that the popup loads after 10 seconds instead of 5 seconds

Your popup uses a Mobile Optimized template. This means that it will automatically only show up on mobile devices.

You can also add other rules for mobile safe targeting to unlock further tweaks, such as:

  • Quit Intent for Mobile – The popup only appears when the user presses the back button or scrolls up.
  • Inactivity Sensor – This will only show the popup after the user has been inactive on the site for a certain number of seconds.
  • Scroll Trigger Popups – This does not show the popup until the user has scrolled down a certain percentage of the page.
  • Button Click by MonsterLinks – The popup will only appear when the user clicks a specific button.

All of the above display rules are based on user interactions and will not affect your SEO rankings.

After setting your viewing rules, click the Save button and switch to the integration type. Just click the Add New Integration button to get started.

Click the button to add a new integration with an email marketing service

OptinMonster will then show you a drop-down list of email providers. Click the drop-down list and select your email marketing service.

Select your email provider from the list

Then just follow the instructions to join your email list. The process depends on your email marketing service. However, OptinMonster offers complete instructions.

When you have connected your email marketing service, click the Save button and go to the Publish screen. Here you can check whether you are happy with your settings.

When you're done, click the Publish button.

Publish your OptinMonster campaign as soon as you are done

Don't forget to hit the Save button at the top of the screen too.

Put your OptinMonster campaign live on your website

Your OptinMonster campaign will not automatically go live on your WordPress website. Instead, you need to log into your WordPress administrator and go OptinMonster »Campaigns.

You should now see your new mobile popup campaign listed here. If not, just hit the Update Campaigns button. Then just click on the "Go Live" link under the name of your campaign.

Put your OptinMonster campaign live on your WordPress site

Your campaign will now be displayed live on your WordPress website. Go ahead and check it out by going to your website on a mobile device.

Just wait for the time you specified in the viewing rules and your popup should appear. Here is our popup live on our demo site.

Other types of mobile popups that won't hurt your mobile SEO rankings

Besides time-delayed popups and popups for user interaction in OptinMonster, you can also create a floating bar, a slide-in or an inline opt-in.

  • A floating bar option will appear at the top or bottom of the user screen without obscuring any of the contents.
  • A slide-in will appear at the bottom or bottom of the website, usually after a time delay.
  • An inline opt-in will appear in the content itself halfway through a page or post.

Just choose one of these types when you start creating your campaign. You will then see the templates that you can use.
